Hydroponics lets people grow plants without soil by using nutrient-rich water. But keeping a system healthy requires frequent checks of nutrient levels, pH, water, lighting, temperature, and humidity.
HydroHarvest is a companion app for hydroponic systems. It gives growers a simple way to monitor their setup, receive alerts, schedule maintenance, and adjust growing conditions even when they are away.
Hydroponic systems can make growing plants easier, but they still require frequent monitoring and manual adjustments.
For Amara, maintaining her system meant constantly checking nutrient levels, pH, lighting, and water. When she left for a coding bootcamp, the system was left unattended and her plants eventually died.
How might we make hydroponic maintenance easier and more proactive?
I created a proto-persona based on the interviews.
Instead of making users navigate through multiple disconnected controls, we explored a guided experience.
Sign up → Add user details → Select plant cycle → Choose plant → Set schedule → Adjust settings → Connect device
The flow gives users a clear starting point while reducing the amount of information they need to figure out on their own.
One place to manage the growing system.
HydroHarvest brings monitoring, scheduling, and system adjustments into one mobile experience.
Monitor
Understand what’s happening with the growing environment.
Schedule
Stay ahead of recurring maintenance.
Adjust
Manage important system settings more easily.
HydroHarvest transformed a maintenance-heavy experience into a concept focused on effortless system management.
The concept aims to help growers:
The biggest opportunity wasn't adding more controls.
It was helping users know what to do, when to do it, and why it matters.
